Smart-House Lab — 12-Week Build Program for Grades 4–8 | CHIPS
CHIPS Smart-House Lab is the weekly, term-length version of the Smart-House Summer Camp, for students in grades 4-8 (ages 9-14) in the Bay Area.
Format: 12 weekly sessions of 1.5 hours (18 hours total), maximum 8 students. One project across the whole term: students tear down real electronics, build the house structure, wire sensors and servo-driven doors, write the C++ that makes it react on an ESP32, personalize it, and present it on a demo night. Every student takes their smart house home.
The term runs in four phases: Weeks 1-3 open up real devices and build the structure; Weeks 4-6 wire the first features and learn the loop of sensor to decision to output; Weeks 7-9 add temperature, humidity, motion, light and rain sensors plus an LCD and RFID access; Weeks 10-12 personalize the build and prepare the demo.
STATUS: this program is not open for enrollment yet. Days, times and pricing are being finalized and the first cohort opens once 8 families join the priority list. Joining the list is free, reserves no spot, and takes no payment - members are told the dates and pricing before the public and get first pick of a spot.
