Compare CHIPS programs by age, grade, interests, and readiness: Otto ages 3-5, ArduinoStudio 7+, CIRCUIT, LIGHTUP, NEURAL, MAKER, camps, and adults.

Grade ranges help narrow the options, but the best placement also depends on what a learner wants to make and how independently they can work through a problem. Two children in the same grade may need different entry points.

This guide explains the role of each CHIPS program and the signals parents can use when grade bands overlap.

Ages 3-5: Otto x CHIPS mini-camp formats

Ages 7+: ArduinoStudio visual hardware pathway

The Otto x CHIPS format combines music, movement, sensory activity, and a guided take-home technology project. Readiness for the small-group format matters more than prior technical knowledge.

The goal is a positive builder identity and concrete cause-and-effect language, not formal coding.

Ages 7+ and grades 3-5: hardware foundations

CIRCUIT is the clearest electronics foundation for grades 3-5. Students wire components and learn why circuits work. ArduinoStudio adds visual logic and real Arduino control for ages 7+ and may suit a child eager to program hardware without beginning with text syntax.

Choose CIRCUIT for deeper electrical fundamentals. Consider ArduinoStudio for a child strongly motivated by interactive controls, dashboards, and logic.

Grades 4-6: AI and robotics

NEURAL combines robots, sensors, computer vision, data, and AI decisions. It fits students who want to understand autonomous behavior and are comfortable with projects that may fail in several different ways.

A student who still needs a circuit foundation can take CIRCUIT first or compare both program descriptions with CHIPS.

Grades 6-8: Arduino and C++

LIGHTUP teaches text-based Arduino programming with real inputs and outputs. It is the strongest direct path for middle school students who want coding skills connected to physical projects.

Students practice variables, conditions, loops, functions, sensors, motors, and systematic hardware/software debugging.

Grades 8-12 and adults: connected systems

MAKER uses ESP32 boards to combine embedded code, sensors, motors, WiFi, Bluetooth, and web interfaces. Teens take on longer system-level and capstone work.

The adult cohort covers related ESP32 and AI-assisted hardware skills in an evening format designed for learners 18+.
